Looking for a way to help employees monitor traffic congestion from nearby road construction, Holiday developed a traffic cam and website.
SEATTLE, WA – August 10, 2007
With it's new real time "JamCam," a Seattle based Holiday Group hopes to ease the drive through Seattle's SODO (South of Downtown) district, where construction on the I-5 freeway is about to begin.
When employees of HolidayGroup.com, one of the nation's largest timeshare resale companies, checked the Washington Department of Transportation (DOT) Web site, they found no traffic cameras near their location on Airport Way South that would monitor local traffic congestion.
Seattle-area commuters are well acquainted with sitting in traffic. Now their wait is about to get longer. Much longer. A major renovation to I-5 in downtown Seattle will close multiple northbound lanes and ramps to traffic for 19 days. Beginning August 10, it will create a logistical nightmare for tens of thousands of drivers throughout the Puget Sound region.
"Our building is on Airport Way South at Spokane Street," said COO Alan Renberger, "and that’ll probably be one of the busiest intersections throughout the construction. We wanted a way for our employees to check traffic conditions before they left for work. After talking with our tech people, we decided to put up our own traffic camera and make it available for public viewing on the Web."
Holiday's JamCam will enable its employees—as well as other Seattle commuters—to check the traffic flow at this major intersection, which is adjacent to the affected portion of I-5. There are numerous other traffic-related links on the site as well.
"We felt there was only one thing worse than being stuck in a Seattle traffic jam," said Holiday president, David Skinner, "and that was having the traffic jam right in front of your building. We have a clear view of Airport Way South from our office windows, so we thought we'd share our little slice of DOT heaven with everybody else."
Skinner also noted that the DOT Web site suggests drivers consider taking a vacation during the closure, to help ease congestion and frustration over delays. "Since Holiday happens to be in the vacation business, I think that's a great idea," he said with a smile. "We'd love to help send them on a timeshare vacation, but if not, at least we can help them out with our JamCam."
